Horse Facts
Did you know? In the Middle Ages, the Pura Raza Españolas learned to pick up objects with their mouths. In earlier times, the horsemen still wore armor and could not dismount every time to pick up fallen objects.
Due to the targeted breeding of PREs, which goes back to a centuries-old tradition, the horses of this breed are suitable for almost every riding discipline. With their beautiful coat, their nobly shaped head and their supple gait, the proud Iberians have a special aesthetic appearance. Their harmonious appearance has always resembled that of the classic Andalusian. They gracefully present their muscular body, the arched neck, and their triangular eyes, which give them an expressive look. The noble animals are therefore perfectly suited for exercises from the High School and classical dressage. Meanwhile, the Pura Raza Españolas are represented in many coat colors. In addition to the grey, the most common coat colour of the PREs, there are mainly the dark grey, the brown and the black. Spotted horses do not occur in this breed.
In addition to their beauty and elegance, it is also the character traits of the PREs that make them so popular. Typical of the Spanish horses are their intelligent, energetic and yet obedient nature. Southern temperament meets mental balance – riders particularly appreciate this combination in them. Their strong ability to remember things also allows for a solid workout.
The Pura Raza Españolas (PRE) originate from Spain and are among the oldest horse breeds in Europe. The popular quadrupeds are closely related to the Berbers and were refined in the past – like many other breeds – by crossbreeding with Arabians and English Thoroughbreds. In 1912, the purely Spanish horses were separated into an independent breeding line, which is still strictly regulated today. This means that stallions and mares can only be called Pura Raza Española if their ancestry can be established from recognised Spanish breeding lines. Undocumented horses, on the other hand, are classified as Andalusian. The Carthusians are considered to be a particularly noble line of the PRE, who were already purebred in the Middle Ages by monks of the same name.
Their harmonious physique and enormous willingness to learn provide the best conditions for the difficult art of the Doma Vaquera, the traditional riding style of the Spanish cattle herders. This requires the highest concentration and skill from horse and rider. But the versatile Pura Raza Españolas are also made for dressage. They shine like masters of the High School and prove with their light-footedness that they are born dancers.
The breed has several bloodlines. These were largely created independently of each other and are still distinguished from each other today. Sometimes, however, horses from different lines were combined with each other to bring in new blood or to improve the line in some other way.
Bocado / Terry bloodline
The Bocado bloodline, also known as the Carthusian or Terry bloodline, is known for its beauty, sweet character and calm temperament. This bloodline is extremely popular, which means that there are already negative effects of inbreeding.
There are 2 brands in the shape of a rein that belong to this line. Both brands represent the same bloodline. This breeding line is now in the hands of the national company Expasa.

Escalera bloodline
The horses that belong to this bloodline were and are mainly bred for performance. The focus was not on appearance, which means that the breed-typical characteristics are less prominent than with other bloodlines.
The line is known for its uniformity and functionality. The breeders of this line did not participate in the 'fads', whether the horse was popular or not, they were always bred in the same way. This is possible, among other things, because the breeder always keeps the best mares for himself, he does not sell them. This bloodline also has ties with the line of Militar, which will be discussed later.
The horses of this line are usually not grey but brown, black or chestnut.
The brand is in the shape of a ladder, see the figure on the right. The brand varies, one has 5 steps, another 3 steps and a horseshoe. The steps represent different branches of the sport.
Miura bloodline
The Miura bloodline is known as a line of bullfighting horses. The bloodlines of Zapata, Calero and Moreno were mainly used in this line.
In no time at all, a line of horses that know no fear had emerged. These horses have an excellent leg structure and exude strength and elegance. This is the curvy type of horse with sturdy legs and an abundance of mane and tail. This is more of the classic type. Of this bloodline (unfortunately) only a few horses are for sale.
Yeguada Militar
These horses were bred for and by the Spanish army, which is very important for the maintenance of P.R.E. breeding. However, this bloodline does not stand alone, the best stallions were purchased or bred by the military, so new blood was regularly introduced.
In the breeding program, the Bocado line was always in the basis, supplemented with a mix of old bloodlines. The horses of this bloodline were chosen for functionality and not for beauty, functionality and a manageable temperament were the priority.
